“…I Promised Her a Bullet Train”
St. Jacobs is a town north of Waterloo notable for the largest Farmers’ Market in Canada but we were there to ride the volunteer operated Waterloo Central tourist railway.
We loved the train ride which runs from a station next to the farmers’ market to Elmira with a stop in St. Jacob’s village. There are 3 trip per operating day and the format is “hop on, hop off”; in the summer, a bus will shuttle you to Elmira town center from the Elmira station. The total round trip takes about 1.5 hours. It is kind of amusing though, Elmira is 11 kilometers north of the farmers’ market, rather than using the shuttle bus or hopping off and hopping on, it might be better to enjoy the entire ride then drive to Elmira which will take around 13 minutes according to Google Maps. That said, you can board at the Waterloo LRT station if you are not driving.
My remark to the Trainman helping Mumtaz disembark at the end of the ride was “she is a little upset with me, I promised her a ride on a bullet train”.
We explored the farmers’ market which was terrific, we will certainly return with a plan and a little more time.
