Peterborough came to mind in August. Peterborough is notable for being quite similar to St. Catharines.  There is a pleasant university area, there is a canal with interesting feats of engineering.  Great bike and hiking trails, comparable to or perhaps a bit better than St. Catharines. We spotted it on a trip to Ottawa in 2021 and felt it necessary to return.
